It was much better that I thought.
In this YA Fantasy book, we see a small village at the edge of a forest which swollen by dark magic and in constant need of being watched by a powerful magician/wizard.
This wizard is anything but kind or considerate toward the village he protects and each ten years he come to the village and pick a young girl (almost always the beautiful one) and take them to his tower for ten years.
Everything changes when this time he choose a clumsy and not ...more

The power in the wood isn't some blind, hating beast - it can think and plan, and work towards its own ends. It can see into the heart of men, all the better to poison them.
This was delightful! It was a lot better than I had anticipated! A very pleasant surprise for me. I had read His Majesty's Dragon before, and it was ok but kind of blah, so I wasn't so sure how I would feel about Uprooted. I finished this book with a big smile on my face.
After I read this, I glanced at a few other reviews ...more

I enjoyed this book so much that I didn't know how to review it. What to say about it? I've never read Naomi Novik's other books, so I didn't have much expectation going into this. However, the concept and blurbs sounded great, and this book was Gail Carriger's book pick of the month. Then my local library didn't have a copy available. So what's an excited reader supposed to do? Well, I actually went out and bought a copy!

This was so lovely it took me weeks to read it solely because I didn't want it to be over.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley--thank you! I have never read anything from this author but have always been interested in picking up her Temeraire series. This book appeared to be a stand alone so I thought it would be a good introduction to her writing. This book turned out to be very good--fantasy fairy tale book with strong female character who didn't feel too cliche.

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley.”
It’s been a long time since I read a true fantasy novel. I had heard a lot of buzz about Uprooted over the last year, and all of it was positive. It was one of the few fantasy novels that I’d see people recommend over and over. And for once, all of the hype is richly deserved.

A fantastic fairytale for grown-ups, featuring strong female protagonists. The author was influenced by the Polish fairytales of her childhood and Tolkein, and she does a beautiful job of creating a fully-realized imaginary landscape of sights, scents and wonder. I was captivated by this world of witches, wizards, and a dark and malicious Wood attempting to devour villages and souls. Recommended for fans of the Grimm Fairytales, Lord of the Rings, Robert Jordan, Patrick Rothfuss, and all lovers

An enthralling take on an old fairy tale, that keeps the feel of a folktale, but with language and characterization that feel comfortably modern. I don't care if this is based on 100% authentic Polish folklore, or an amalgam of various folk tales, filtered through a Polish-American family's bedtime stories - it has a lot of heart and charm.
I don't want to spoil anything - I had a ton of fun just picking this up and going for the ride. And I'm putting Novik's other books on my TBR pile! ...more
