Whew! That was a staggering read. I'm surprised at how a 900 page doorstop--one with little discernible driving plot, no less--could be as engaging as this was. The gritty, smokey, unromanticized Victorian setting and all the little historical details drew me in, as did the strangely inviting second-person opening chapter, and I stuck around to find out where this maddeningly complex setup would lead. This book was absolutely wonderful. I loved every bit of it. I would recommend to anyone that likes books about Victorian England. It is about a prostitute trying to claw her way out of the streets in Victorian England.
