I've got less than 200 pages and I just couldn't will myself to finish. I just couldn't take another chapter.
There are things I like about this, but the length is so damn endless and the plot is so slow at times. I'm beginning to understand why I didn't make it through Mr. Sammler's Planet all those years ago.
I can even understand why this is such an important book. Maybe I just don't like Bellow. He's a beautiful writer, but his frequent philosophical digressions and references to seemingly eve ...more

Augie March is our Everyman narrator, an ineffectual character from Chicago, who recalls the second, third, and fourth decades of his life. This offers an oblique exposition of the third, fourth, and fifth decades of American history. Poor pitiful Augie starts as the child of a near-invalid single mother. He has an aggressive older brother, a mentally impaired younger brother, and they are all dominated by a pushy boarder who insists on being called Grandma.
