Recommended to fans of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
This book really rambles. I started off highly engaged - transfixed, even. I remained engaged for a while but gradually found I was more and more reluctant to pick it up again after setting it down. I'm mystified as to how this ended up on the NYT Top 10 list last year. I'm usually a fan of picaresque novels, but this is the kind of work that gives them a bad name. There's nothing wrong with writing another slave narrative but to have the protagonist follow his "white savior" across the globe and have that white guy be about as compelling as a wet cord of wood is not okay. There are some astounding moments in this book. It bounces between different harrowing and fascinating settings without ever letting the reader wander or question the premise. The characters and movement are thoroughly engrossing, and tell a oft-told story from a totally new perspective.
