After reading 59 pages and waiting five months for summoning up enough motivation to go on reading (all my Goodreads friends seem to love the book with abandon - so what's wrong with me?), I have decided to finally put a lid on the case and throw the book out of its designated and by this time slightly dusty spot on my nightstand. This was a difficult book to rate as the beginning definitely draws you in despite the gruesome details, but the farther into the book I read the less interested I became. Initially I could not figure out what the heck was going on, how would this book turn out? Was Marianne crazy or would this develop into some elaborate multiple-lives scenario? I was convinced throughout that Marianne was crazy, but to those who have not read it I will let you make up your own mind and see how it all turns out

Whilst I was reading this book, someone asked me if it was a love story and I replied 'I doubt it'. Well it turned out I was mistaken because enduring love is at the very centre of the story. There are two distinct voices in the narration, so at no point was I unsure about whose story I was reading. I did prefer the narrator's prose more than Marianne's. Still trying to figure out why I did not love this book. For some reason two me of the characters and stories fell flat. Could see a certain type of reader absolutely loving this book. Did not hate it enough to stop reading, yet was not "excited" to puck it back up each night. Probably best for big fans of historical fiction and mythology.
