3.5-4* I almost put this book aside & marked it as DNF after coming across some really crude pages partway through. But I couldn’t let the book go - I wanted to know how it turned out too much. After skimming past some of the crudeness, the book picked up again, & I had a difficult time putting it down. This is my first book by John Boyne, & he is a remarkable writer. I really wanted to like this book after having read and loved The Heart's Invisible Furies but I didn't like the main character or the side characters so it was hard to keep going. I got to at least 20% of the book so I did give it a go but there are too many other books out there for me to keep forcing myself on this one. ...more
