This was my first exposure to Shirley Jackson, and I was hooked from the beginning.
Reading this, I understand what The Little Stranger was trying - and failed, either despite, or perhaps because of, being twice the length - to be. Even some of the "haunting" events seem to be pretty much copies of Hill House, but without Jackson's concise prose. ...more

Eleanor is a troubled spinster recently liberated by the death of her mother from caretaking duties. Because of her psychic aptitude, she is invited to join some strangers in an experiment in which they will inhabit a remote mansion believed to be haunted.
Any more description would be a bit of a plot spoiler. Suffice it to say that this is a tense psychological drama that holds your interest more with inner demons than with any poltergeist.

Dr. Montague wants to study a haunting house. After finding Hill House he rents the place for three months and invites a bunch of people with experience with paranormal happenings to come assist him in his studies. Although he sends out numerous invitations only two people accept and come to Hill House. They are joined by the owner's nephew, who will one day inherit the house.
