The 5 stars are for Emily Wilson's lengthy introduction and translator's notes; her overview of the origins, context and controversies concerning The Odyssey was very helpful, and the translator's note was fascinating! Wilson came to the task with fresh, female eyes, and her thoughtful choices make the work deeper and more nuanced than what we've had before. What can I say that hasn’t been said many times before? It’s a classic, deservedly so. I’ve been a fan of Greek mythology since I was a little girl and I already knew the tale of Odysseus quite well, but never quite got around to read the Odyssey until now. Though there were some parts that dragged a bit (yet another feast where someone bemoans the unknown fate of Odysseus), it usually picked up again before too long. Emily Wilson’s translation is very readable.
