So, here's how I think this book got written and published:
Publisher (P): Jojo, we loved your Me Before You. The public still goes gaga for it. We think you need to write a sequel.
Jojo Moyes (JM): Hmm...but I didn't intend to write one. This was supposed to be a stand-alone novel.
P: LOL Awww..you are soo cute!! "Stand-Alone" HAHAHAHA.. This is soooo 2000s. No one writes stand-alones now. It must be at least a duology. Of course, if you want to make it into a trilogy, that will be even better.

The sequel to Me Before You was, in my opinion, just as engaging as the first book. I love the way Moyes crafts a story and writes characters that I want to follow and root for. The story of what happens to Louisa in the aftermath of the tragedy from the first book, After You is a story of grief, new relationships, quirky friendships, and her realization that she still has much to live for.
