I didn’t expect such a character driven read from this but it was a pleasant surprise to have each and every character I met leave a mark on me after reading this - I already downloaded book two to finish this duology but I think I’m going to save it for another “rainy” day re: mental & physical symptoms because this really turned my mood around even though it wasn’t an always uplifting read.

It's been a long time since I've read a book I just couldn't put down. I was forced to pause for sleep last night, but *nothing* was going to happen today until I picked it up and finished it. Outstanding!

I quite liked this, even though its format is of a sort I usually find frustrating — I usually strongly prefer staying with the same characters throughout a whole novel, rather than jumping from generation to generation. But in this case, the premise and worldbuilding were appealing enough that I was able to look past the time jumps.

Short review: strong recommend! I love books that explore coexistence with alien life forms. Even though it doesn't quite hit the five star mark for me, and even though there's no cliffhanger, I am immediately starting the second book!
