A book in 3 parts taking place in 3 different times but all connected by the high mountains of Portugal. Another theme is grief as each man tries to escape a bit from their grief. Tomas lost his partner and son and at a loss, sets out on an epic road trip when cars were still more of a thing heard about than actually seen. He sets out to chase a statue read about in the journal of a priest in Africa. The journey was a trial and the consequences are seen in the next two parts as well.

I'm sure there is more than I got on a first reading, but the writing was so wonderful and the crazy situations felt so true (if not realistic) that I will go back again. One of the most satisfying books I've read in a while.
