Set in present day India, The White Tiger is a novel about a man named Balram who was born in the darkness and poverty but works his way up in the world to become an entrepreneur. As he tells his story he talks about what it takes for someone to move up in the heavily caste based society. Reading the reviews for this book was more entertaining & educational than the book itself. I got tired of hearing several phrases repeated by the narrator/driver...I could care less how often he wanted to "dip his beak" and I didn't like the overuse of the term, "sister-f'r" either. The book seemed to take much longer than necessary...especially listening to it on audio.

I did not "get" this book. It never engaged me as a story nor did it have "the ring of truth". This story felt fanciful and more like a dream or nightmare than a reality. I do not understand why it won a book award.
