There is no doubt this was a beautifully written book. The author captures the minds, thoughts and dreams of the twins as young children so accurately that they feel completely real. What really struck me with the story was its reflection on love - who deserves it, who doesn't, what happens when love occurs between people it shouldn't. One of my very rare DNFs - and I feel weird about it because the book is covered is enthusiastic praise and it won awards and all that, but holy hell. I always make myself get at least halfway through a book, to give it a good chance if it doesn't start out well. So I got halfway through and just said FUCK IT.

I'm sorry but I just couldn't finish this novel.
I really gave it an effort but I felt I was trudging through mud, leaving me annoyed and angry and already longing for the next book on my shelf.
Why couldn't I finish this one?
You can't blame the writing. It's phenomenal, almost poetic in some way, but the books feels more about the words than the story. (I have made a similar remark in Clockwork Orange, but in that book the violence was a strong enough offset to counter the prose). The theme of gu ...more
