If hardboiled mysteries are your thing, this is a great example. For me, it wasn't terribly enjoyable since I'm not a huge fan of the genre (and there are plot points that I simply didn't understand because I don't know hardboiled lingo well enough), but that's not a reflection of the quality at all. I may try another one in print to see if that helps. I really liked the gritty, sticky depiction of of New Orleans' underbelly, so I'll probably come back for more of that.

I read the second book in the series years ago and hated it. But a magazine I love (Bookmarks) keeps recommending the books in the series and I thought I would give it another chance by reading the first one. I am thinking now that I just hadn't been in the right mind frame the first time around with this series. I enjoyed this: the setting, the colloquialisms and the mystery/thriller aspect.

I liked Dave Robicheaux. He doesn’t mess around. When he hears that he may be on someone’s hit list, he doesn’t skulk and sneak around, trying to find out what’s going on. Not Dave! He goes and asks the guy directly. He has a lot to deal with in this book... a dead girl, mobsters, drug and gun runners, kidnapping, a questionable partner, a new girlfriend, his own demons... and in the end he does pretty well, but probably not in the way you would expect.
