What Members Thought

This one is a bit too heavy on the sea voyages & battles - made for quite a slog at times. It reminded me of Patrick O'Brian's Master & Commander and I see that he is one of Novik's favourite authors. I did enjoy Laurence & Temeraire's story, though, & all the shenanigans in China. I love that Temeraire is dying to get home to England & change the lot of the dragons there, & his naivete in thinking it will be a doddle to change all those hidebound old men's minds. This one didn't hit quite as hard as the first book. The journey to China felt both too long and not long enough, with some parts feeling very slow. Once they get to China the pace picks up, but it seemed like the problem was solved a bit too easily. I will be continuing the series, but I'm hoping we get less about the philosophy of raising dragons in the next one.
