Nice read! Not quite worthy of the accolades I’d read, I still enjoyed the story of Circe, her life on Aiaia, and all the interwoven stories and references to other Greek characters and legends. Circe’s story is quite sad and her solitude striking. I wonder how readers who don’t know Greek mythology feel about the book. Definitely sparked my interest even though it was an easy book to put down.

I resisted for the longest time, because the negative reviews scared me.
I was scared that Circe would be watered down, but even though she isn't the Kirke as I understand her, she is "good enough". I don't think her weakness and powerlessness makes her any less strong.
Of course the Ancient Greek society and pantheon was horribly misogynist. Who doesn't know that?
Of course there were a lot of things that irritated me. (That's why only 4 stars :-D) But the rest of the book, the whole of the book ...more
