I really enjoyed the latino culture representation in this book. I'm not Mexican and my parents are nothing like Julia's but I could definitely recognize parts of my family and traditions.
I liked that the author didn't shy away from making Julia a difficult person. Her personality is very confrontational and blunt and she has a lot of disagreements with her parents but that doesn't make her love them any less. She's nothing like the more usual mil ...more

I received a book from RHCB for an honest review, thank you.
While I had a hard time connecting or caring very much about the main character, aND overall I did enjoy the book. However, I am not the target audience and I can see what many teens could con net wit the ma in character, while I thought she was a little mean and thought she was better than her friends. I did like the relationship between Julia and her mother. I also thought the "mystery" or questions surrounding her sister's life was s ...more

I am not sure what others with 4 and 5 star ratings are seeing in this book. There is a lot of grounding, a LOT of crying and a lot of angst. BUT none of this really comes together into an interesting read
