A heartbreaking account of life in North Korea, and the crisis that is likely carrying on there still today. It puts into perspective how lucky I am, the awful power of fear and propaganda, and how easily a nation can be cowed into their own very fatal destruction.

This is the story of a man escaping from North Korea during the famine of the '90s, but it's not a story with a happy ending. Nor is it happy in the beginning or the middle. This is a man who emigrated in 1960 through no choice of his own, he was a child and his father was told that they were moving to "paradise". But the things promised them did not exist, and instead he started a 36-year span of suffering and starving and day-to-day survival. The book is short but powerful.

Around the Year (ATY) Prompt #22. A story of survival
Heartbreaking memoir of a Korean/Japanese man forced to move to North Korea as a child. Survival was almost impossible, but he did, even as he suffered the deaths of his Japanese mother and Korean father, and the deaths of other family members. He eventually escaped to China and was returned to Japan. His life is still full of tragedy even after his escape.
