Probably a 4.5.
I'm a sucker for books that combine history with identity crisis, and this book did exactly that.
I wasn't expecting the punch that each section offers nor the anger and criticism towards Ireland's suppressive Catholic tradition (although I should have) and yet that's exactly what this book offered for the first 400 pages - hence the opening sections titles’ “Shame" and "Exile."
The book lost a little of its momentum for me the last 150 pages once Cyril hits middle age but I think ...more
