"Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe?"
In the chaos, in the night, it was impossible to say which of the four had asked after Alice’s welfare. Later, when everything got worse, each would insist it had been them.

Five female co-workers on a corporate team-building retreat get lost in a remote area of Australian bushland. Three days later, four of the women make it back to the checkpoint. They say the fifth woman, Alice Russell, left them behind to make her own way back earlier that morning

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I liked it even better than The Dry which I liked a lot. It almost entirely happens in the present, unlike The Dry, and for me that was a more satisfying read, rather than being slightly disjointed as the story went back and forth between two time periods. Having read the first certainly adds to this, but is not essential in order to enjoy it.

The difference between this and The Dry is like night and day. While I really did not like the writing style of the first book, this one pleasantly surprised me. It is very weird that both were written by the same author but O am glad I didn’t give up at The Dry.

Another compelling mystery from Harper. More than other than any other author that I’ve recently read, Harper creates a wonderful sense of space. Like the characters, I felt lost and on the edge of panic in the middle of the dense woods. She also captures how this panic can erode trust and make those annoying traits in others into a trigger for murder. 4.25/5.
