It was an amazing read. In the back cover of the book it is what Katherine Dunn says about this story and it's absolutely true :

I have to think on this one. It was beautifully told, but was it all metaphor and meaning or was it a brief snapshot of life in prison and on death row? Was it hard and deep or mythical and fantastical? I suppose it can be all of those things, but what book does that? How can it hold so much is so few pages? How do I wrap my head around all of it? I think I shall be left to ponder...

I have mixed feelings about The Enchanted. On the one hand, I read it in a single sitting, with a must-turn-the-page urgency that in theory is what I am always seeking in a book. There is beautiful writing here, very compelling imagery, and characters both horrific and sympathetic, but it seems only fair to warn potential readers that this subject matter is beyond dark -- largely dealing with the repeated and graphic sexual abuse of children and teens, and the effect of this abuse on their adult ...more
