Really promising novel -- I found the characters and their secrets interesting and with lots of depth. I liked how Jamaica itself seemed to become a character in the book as well. I did think that it could have stood a touch more editing -- a few words and phrases were repeated so often that it became annoying and jarring, and a few things didn't quite make sense at the end. Also -- and I can't believe I read this for the second time in a week -- bougainvillea has no scent! Authors need to check

I liked what I'm assuming is a realistic depiction of Jamaica on how the poor are treated and the view on homosexuality. What I didn't like were the characters and the lack of hope in this. It was hard for me to get behind any of the characters who were all either morally compromised, weak, or inexplicably naive. The insecure teenager I can understand but not understanding how the adults around you are struggling to provide for you didn't feel believable to me. I didn't look forward to picking t
