An omniscient narrator treats us with in-depth insight into the minds of - at first hard to distinguish - small-town characters' of variable unlikability. Some earned my immediate disgust and kept it chapter after chapter, others fell from grace later on and a third, astonishingly large, group made me feel slowly, but steadily growing and root-building compassion as their motives, histories and backgrounds became clearer.
