This is a quiet book about a quiet girl/lady, Maisie Dobbs. The book starts with Maisie opening her own investigation type firm that she took over from her mentor Maurice Blanche. Maurice trained her how to think, observe and analyze people. The story bounces back and forth a bit between her own childhood and how she came to be a lady investigator at the time and her first case with serendipitously leads her to helping her benefactor by investigating a home for WWI veterans who returned with bot ...more

I really enjoyed this although i was annoyed by the trip back to the war, I felt it was totally unnecessary in a book meant to be about private investigations. It didn't really add to the storyline and could all have been covered by a couple of short paragraphs. However i might well follow this series ...more

Full disclosure...I am a huge fan of any book British, especially set in the early to mid century. And Maisie Dobbs captures the spirit 100%! Set in 1929, but seamlessly moving back and forth into the Great War....this novel sets the stage beautifully for the reader to discover, fall in love and champion Maisie Dobbs. The book is less about the "mystery" and more about getting to know the world as it was then - how a generation grew up, changed the world and defined feminism all while going thro ...more

I've heard wonderful things about this series, I thought I would have liked it more. I did like it, but felt it was slow. I will likely give another Maisie Dobbs mystery a go, because I liked the character. ...more
