It seemed enough for her to just deal with whatever it was that came her way, calmly and without fuss. Or perhaps it was simply that things were happening inside her, terrible things, which no one else could even guess at, and thus it was impossible for her to engage with everyday life at the same time. This was one of the tournament books that initially held very little interest for me. It seemed like one of those quiet contemplative books that would be more about crafting a (boring) little world than providing a powerful story. I was happy to be horrendously wrong. This book was so wonderfully weird and surprising and frustrating and mesmerizing that I’m a little sorry I read it so fast. I need to come back to it some day. I knew this book would be weird, but I was not prepared for how upsetting it would be. ALL the Content Warnings: domestic violence, child abuse, rape, eating disorder, mental illness, suicidal ideation, infidelity, and horrific cruelty to a dog. (The bit with the dog made me wish I had not read this book - why do not other reviews warn about this??) Yeong-hye's eating disorder is described in detail.

Very, very strange. Mental illness, dreams, people's response to veganism, cultural norms. Read for Week 43. A book with a chilling atmosphere (scary, unsettling, cold). It was definitely unsettling.
