What Members Thought

I didn't find this book easy to get into, and in the first couple of hundred pages didn't always want to dive right back into it, and it wasn't because there's a lot of ice hockey in the book about which I know less than nothing. That didn't matter. But at about the halfway point I knew I had to finish it in one sitting. This book shows the best and worst of human nature, and not always where you expect it. Ok I have to admit i read this series out of order but i loved the second one so much i had to go back and read the first and it didn't disappoint. Backman has it all in my opinion literary style, a great narrative and excellent characterisation. Every page engenders a new emotion I know nothing about hockey but that doesn't matter at all.

I had tears in my eyes for much of this book. Tears of anger, frustration, fear, and joy. This has to be one of the best books I've read in a very long time. Relationships are at its core. Relationships between parents/children, between males & females, between a child and the sport they play, between a child and their coach, between married people and dating people, and friends. The book started somewhat slow for me and I could feel the dread that something bad would happen and soon but then I couldn't stop reading. The depiction of the town's character as well as the reactions and reflections of the main characters was so thoughtful and engrossing. Its about hockey but about people. The writing is done well.

Wow...I loved this book! This is a story, a love letter really, to anyone who loves playing on a sports team, loves a sports team, or lives in a sports town. The sport is hockey, but I think it is likely similar for other team sports. Every character, even minor ones, were so clearly depicted, I felt like I knew each and every one of them. This is one of those books that you feel like you are living in that world while you read it, not just watching it. How often can you say that about a book! F
