I didn't find this book easy to get into, and in the first couple of hundred pages didn't always want to dive right back into it, and it wasn't because there's a lot of ice hockey in the book about which I know less than nothing. That didn't matter. But at about the halfway point I knew I had to finish it in one sitting. This book shows the best and worst of human nature, and not always where you expect it. One of the characters explains towards the end, that the people of Beartown may not alway

I'm a little late to the party with this book by the popular Swedish author, Fredrik Backman. Beartown is a small, remote town in the forest - a town obsessed with ice hockey and one whose residents are pinning their hopes for the future on a junior team about to compete in the national hockey semifinals. An act of violence occurs that threatens to destroy these hopes and deeply affects and divides the community. I was drawn in by the story and the people of Beartown, who were recognizably human

Totally believe the hype. I must be one of the last people to read this however and it has been on my TBR since it was released. It is a little slow to get going, and the inciting incident doesn't appear till the 40% mark but it changes everything. This is probably the most serious, topic wise of all of this author's books that I have read. I can't wait for the next book in the series now.

The book started somewhat slow for me and I could feel the dread that something bad would happen and soon but then I couldn't stop reading. The depiction of the town's character as well as the reactions and reflections of the main characters was so thoughtful and engrossing. Its about hockey but about people. The writing is done well.

After reading A Man Called Ove and now finishing Beartown, I’m beginning to think Frederick Backman is a master of dynamite. His books start out like a slow burn, almost to the point of dragging on, but then, about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way in...an explosion that keeps you glued to your book, ignoring housework and social media and all other distractions. As the book nears its end, you’ll start looking at the dwindling pages with remorse, knowing you’ll eventually come to the finish and wishing you

Wow...I loved this book! This is a story, a love letter really, to anyone who loves playing on a sports team, loves a sports team, or lives in a sports town. The sport is hockey, but I think it is likely similar for other team sports. Every character, even minor ones, were so clearly depicted, I felt like I knew each and every one of them. This is one of those books that you feel like you are living in that world while you read it, not just watching it. How often can you say that about a book! F
