If you’ve never read this, I highly recommend it. It’s definitely a major time-investment (it took me over 3 weeks to read), but well worth it. Clavell has created an intricate portrait of early 17th century Japan, from the perspective of both insiders and outsiders. And you learn almost immediately that the man could certainly write an action scene. I know very little about ships, but I could picture this perfectly:

Good heavens-this audiobook took me three months to read. Amazing audio reader-he gets 5 stars. I enjoyed the history and cultural elements of Japan and I fell in love with Blackthorne as he navigated a new country and tried to understand the culture. The ending was eh but the story is not really about the ending-more the journey. Epic and I can see why my mom and dad loved it so much. Note-there is some sexual content and violence.
I read it first time when I was 10-11. In Finnish. This time in English. It was a quite different experience. I had forgotten most of it.
