After reading this, I want to hug young Jacqueline and tell her how brilliant and amazing she is and how she'll get even more brilliant and amazing as she grows up.

This was such a lovely reading experience, and I think the choice to tell the story of her young life in verse was a great one. Woodson's poetry is just the right balance of straight-forward and lyrical, so that it never got so flowery that you couldn't figure out what she was talking about, but it also didn't just feel like prose wit

I listened to this book on audio in about two days. I’m glad I went the audio route because it was someone telling me their own story rather than me reading it. I thought the writing was beautiful and the characters I won’t soon forget.
