So far I'm two for two on John Scalzi books!
This one is set out in two sections: the main story, and three 'codas'. The main story starts almost as a parody of the Star Trek style of space opera - a friend of mine compared it to Galaxy Quest, and that's pretty close. But then begins to expand as the main characters (who aren't the MAIN characters - they're the 'Redshirts' of the title) begin to realise that something is incredibly wrong, and start thinking outside the box (or perhaps The Box), ...more

I feel like I cannot get a reliable feel for this author. This is probably my 7th book by this author but I've only really liked 4 of them. The best I can figure out is that I like his mix of mystery and sci-fi books the most. When it's just sci-fi, it's mostly a miss with me. This one I actually liked and thought it was pretty funny till the last quarter (view spoiler) Overall though, I did like this one.

This is a wonderful book. It made me laugh out loud. It thrilled my science-fiction-lover's heart. It was so very clever, and bonus joy if you're familiar at all with the original Star Trek series (but not necessary). This is a keeper. I'm already looking forward to reading it again, and planning who to recommend it to and who to just give a copy to.
