The Thorn Birds is a generational historical fiction that takes place mostly on a sheep farm in early twentieth century Australia. It tells the story of the Cleary family and their close friend, Father Ralph de Bricassart. The Australian outback was a tough environment with many droughts, fires, and invasive rabbits but it was not the environment that caused most of the drama in the story, it was the characters relationships. Glad I finally read this. It delivered on the whole epic, family saga promise.
All the big adjectives apply here, grand, sweeping, epic. And there was a lot to enjoy. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes grand sweeping epics.
I enjoyed it much more than I thought. now off to find the movie.
