What Members Thought
The whole book is the ramblings of a young man (14 or 15?) who flunks out of Pencey (a boy's school) and leaves it on a Friday. School is normally out on Wednesday, which is the day his parents are expecting him home. He lives in NYC so takes a train from his school to NYC and bums around for a few days. For 275 of the 277 pages, the reader is subjected to his rambling thoughts and actions with no particular purpose in mind. He is a young man with no goals or purpose.

I can't say enough about how much I love this book. Easily my favorite book of all time. No matter when I read it, I always get something more out of it (and I've read it no less than 10 times now over the years; and I'm not one for re-reads usually).

The first time I read this I was in high school and I hated it. I read it again about ten years later and I still didn't really like it, but I didn't hate it. This kid is selfish and confused, but he doesn't seem to want to hurt anybody, so at least that's something.
