I fall into the category of people who can't relate to the main character, Holden Caulfield. I get the impression we're supposed to think him emotionally disturbed, which I do, and possibly a victim, which I don't. He's a completely unreliable narrator, he even tells you that sometimes he can lie for hours. This makes most of his ramblings pointless, since there's a good chance he's exaggerating or making things up.

Salinger captures the essence of adolescent rebellion and alienation very well, but I couldn't quite figure out what his point was. I wonder if people would still be reading this if it had never been banned.

such a cleverly crafted story! right when you think you can't stand reading it any longer, the true meaning and depth of the story hits you and then you realize what an amazing story it really is!

Better the second time around than the first, but I still thought it was only alright. Holden Caulfield is a judgemental cynic, calling everyone a "phony".
