I know this book is a classic, and people read it all the time. My roommate said that she and her friends loved it in high school. Well, I hated it. I thought it was a dreadful book, about a spoiled, self-absorbed rich brat, whining about his life. He wasn't likable--his only redeeming quality was his love for his sister, and even that was warped. Since I didn't like him, I didn't care what happened to him in the end. I did not enjoy this book, and would not recommend it to anyone else.

I appreciated this novel more when I recently reread it as an adult. I was able to appreciate the conversational prose. Interestingly, this book's protagonist, Holden, several times refers to Ring Lardner, who was known for his vernacular writing style.

I don't care what anyone says, I effing love this book.

I'm completely in love. I read it in Venice and I kept having to stop sightseeing so I could sit down wherever I was and read more. Lonely, idealistic 16-year-old screwup: who can't identify with that? ...more

I feel that I may need to read this again. I've read it twice: like Janet, the first time I was too young to understand it, but the second time, I just didn't like it.

If I had read it 17 years ago I probably would have loved it. I'm kind of glad I waited so long.
