Not a true DNF - I'll come back to this next winter. I read half of it in a snowy cabin in Sweden and then had to move on to something else for a deadline, and now I can't bear to read it when it's all green and chirping birds outside.

For some reason, this time last year, I couldn't get into this at all. But a year later, I not only managed to get into it, but discovered it was something special.

The Bear & the Nightingale by Katherine Arden definitely lived up to the hype. The prose and story in general was beautiful and made me dream of running through a forest during the summer. The characters are as alive as the forest the story is set in and around; even the Priest had such humanity in him that you felt for his errors, though never did the story justify his actions, you could sense his desperation that caused his actions.

This is a good novel that is well written and certainly deeply researched. Parts of it really sing and then others are bogged down by lengthy exposition. You can tell this is due to the fact that it's the first in a trilogy and so the plot is being stretched out as much as possible, or at least it seemed that way to me. I liked the character of Vasya and would be interested to see where her adventures lead her but I'm not sure I want to take the plunge if the other novels are this drawn out.

Liked it a lot, not sure if I will read the sequel though. The narration was good with the accent helping create the environment and characters. Definitely has a fairy tale like feel to it.
