This book felt like one big soapbox about the dangers of technology. The main character was so naiive. The twist was predictable. It wouldn't of been so bad if the author didn't beat us over the head with Mercer's speeches. There was also a major plothole with Kalden having to do with the identity software. I liked the kayaking parts the best, honestly. I was so close to DNFing it more than once. I am glad I finished it though. It feels like an accomplishment considering how boring this was a

I found myself without a book on a recent trip (weird, I know), so I picked this one up at the bookstore, thinking I'd try to get it read before the movie comes out. This is a great allegory - ok, maybe more really-could-happen-is-actually-happening than allegory - about our generation's decreasing privacy and increasing online presence. I think this book would have been better if it was a little shorter. It felt very drawn out. And nothing really ever happens in this book.

Whew! What a compelling, mad rush of a book. Eggers' new book is the movement toward 1984 of the Internet Age, or at the very least the Panopticon of our age, all within a gigantic, Googlish cult. A very disturbing book that could be foretelling our futures if we are not careful- In these days of NSA spying and corporate data mining. ...more
