I'm not even sure where to start with my thoughts on this book. I think it's a powerful look at racism in all forms - blatant and inherent.
It's hard to understand the ways that (us) white people are racist when we don't think we are or we actively try not to be. It's not intentional and that is harder to grasp and understand as a white person. We have to do better and part of that is recognizing that everyone has some bias in them.

Jodi Picoult did a good job writing about a difficult topic, especially from a white author: racism in America. She continuously hits the reader over the head with white privilege and the challenges that African Americans face every day going about their business and invites readers (especially the white ones) to open their eyes. There was a little twist at the end that seemed unnecessary but I thought this was a very good book.

Totally recommend and think all should read it. I wrote a nice review but it disappeared!
While clearly a novel about race in our country today, I liked the emphasis on relationships and family -- especially the mother-daughter relationships. Disturbing to learn that the Skinhead movement is alive and well and determined to "blend in" rather than reveal themselves as they did in the 90s.
