Wonderful! It took me a while to finally read this book, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long. It’s amazing! I highly recommend it to fellow WWII fans...however, it is not for the squeamish...there are images in here that are medically very disturbing. Such an amazing book based on true people and events. 💜

This book is almost universally highly rated but despite that I found it to be much less than i expected. Read as a book of the month for a GR group, I certainly spent more time dissecting the events and characterisation of the book. At first I felt that the author had chosen 3 diverse characters to portray a period of history that is ultimately awful. I did feel she was taking us on a journey worth taking.

However, the characters were not fleshed out - Caroline came across as a spoilt, selfish,

Really, this was a 3 or 3.5 book rounded up. I had a hard time with this book. I've ead many, maybe too many, books about WW II and man's inhumanity to man.

In two of the last three novels I have read, I learned in the 'Acknowledgement' following the texts that they are somewhat auto/biographical. In both instances, had I known that in advance, my 4 stars would more likely been 5's. ...more

An exceptional book. WWII told from points of view of 3 women, including a survivor of concentration camp medical experiments and one of the doctors who did the surgery. Horrifying, sad, and uplifting tale of survival under unimaginable circumstances. Highly recommended.
