This was a difficult book to read. I have read the Ravensbruck book by Sarah Helm which details the events of what happened at the concentration camp but in a much more impersonal way. This book gave those women faces and voices. It made it much more real. I struggled with the decision to finish it but in the end I'm glad I did. Be prepared when you read this one. Really, this was a 3 or 3.5 book rounded up. I had a hard time with this book. I've ead many, maybe too many, books about WW II and man's inhumanity to man. For some reason, this book just really got to me on a deeper level. Maybe because I am terrified of surgery myself. Maybe just because I've read so many. I'm not sure but whatever it is, I almost quit reading a couple of different times. But I continued on and once I started with Part 2, I was able to get through it much better. I even had a ...more

A solid historical novel focusing on 3 different women in WW2. I struggled initially with the separate threads. All three women are living very different lives, and I didn't enjoy the switching between storylines. But the content was strong, and I enjoyed following the story, even knowing that happily ever after wasn't realistic.

Recommended for those who enjoy world war 2 stories.

In two of the last three novels I have read, I learned in the 'Acknowledgement' following the texts that they are somewhat auto/biographical. In both instances, had I known that in advance, my 4 stars would more likely been 5's. ...more
