I'LL JUST PRETEND THIS BOOK NEVER EXISTED

I swear to my books I have never thought I could give 1* to J.Ro because come on it's J.Ro. we are talking about.. But I can't come to terms with this.. This deep betrayal from the woman I consider a goddess among writers. I have a shelf-shrine for her:

So this book was a complete disaster. She stabbed me in the back and it hurts so much I can't even.
I don't care if she wrote this, if she just said "That's ok, go ahead with this lame and stupid story" or

Review also posted on my blog! :)

I went through a lot of trepidation deciding whether or not I wanted to read this book. Many people are very polarized on their opinions about this book; many reviewers I trust absolutely hated it, so it had me worried. But in the end, I decided I needed to form my own opinion about it and just read it. This is a SPOILER FREE review, for both this novel and the rest of the Harry Potter series!

All in all, my feelings are still very mixed about this book. There are

I had low expectations when I picked it up and yeah, I didn't love it. Too many inconsistencies to take seriously. I don't understand why you would take the most problematic aspect of the original series (time travel) and base a whole play on that, not even following the same rules.
Also it feels as if someone told Jack Thorne ABOUT the general story of the series and the characters and he just wrote whatever he wanted. There was no interest in making this consistent with the original series.

I'm

***SPOILERS IN REVIEW***

Okay so, wow. What a book. First off, I want to say that I LOVE the story, but the writing? I realize this is a play but racing through the first two years of Albus at Hogwarts was weird. I also get that one of the themes was "But Slytherin is good too!" but it was so fucking overplayed. Yes, we get it let's move on.
Harry seemed cockier, Ron dumber, and Hermione matronly and perhaps it IS because they're older, but there were just some bits of dialogue that didn't seem l

Like Harry or Albus - what expectations all us mere mortal put on a story we've both anticipated and dreaded. As an active member of fandom during the releases of the original 7, each came with expectations and then anger from some when those didn't match up. "Why didn't Harry end up with Hermione?" "How could she let Sirius act so selfish" "Ginny became a Mary Sue, she became fan fiction Ginny" "Dumbledore would never have acted that way" "Harry should have died, the happy ending was too contri ...more

Even going into this with an extremely open mind I was still pretty diasappointed. the old characters did not feel like themselves at all...most of their dialogue felt awkward and forced to me. the plot development was super rushed, with lots of coincidences and contrived happy endings, but it's almost like it was written that way on purpose...to be ridiculous and implausible. most of the time I was unmotivated to read it, and it wasn't until the last 15% of the book that I felt like the writing ...more

Read much more like a book than I thought it would, and it was more of a continuation of the other books than I was expecting. Which was a good thing. I very much enjoyed this new one, I hope she writes others,

This reads like fanfiction, but it was entertaining.

Really more of a 3.5/5 for me, but I'm rounding up. Many have told me or I've read it reads like fan fiction and they are right. It seems odd that Rowling really had much to do with this one. I will say that it was an enjoyable couple of hours it didn't feel like a Potter book. Maybe it was the play format, maybe it was just the age of the characters we all know and love. Anyway, it is worth it to read. ...more
