David Mitchell is probably one of my top three favorite writers, but I must admit that after Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks and now this, I'm becoming a teensy bit weary of his multiple character, many layered, sprawling epics.

That being said, there is a lot of quality in Ghostwritten. It's very obviously Mitchell's debut because he's very much still refining his writing style and approach to structure. Whereas CA and TBC are feasts of multiple courses whose dishes complement and enhance each oth ...more

In a way, I'm glad I stuck with Mitchell's debut novel as my first proper (/successful) foray into his weird and wonderful style of fiction. I have heard that David Mitchell believed his strength lays in novella-length compositions, and it's easy to see how this might translate into such novels - an insight into his writing process that actually enhanced my reading experience in some ways ...more
