I'm not sure if I read this at university, but if I did, it was probably time to read it again. Thought of as the first "gothic" novel, the various misunderstandings, doomed loves and hidden identities actually reminded me a lot of some of Shakespeare's tragedies. I was also surprised that the language didn't have quite as an archaic feel as some other classics of its time.
