It's about time I finished this book! I've had it on my shelf at home for years, & after two attempts at reading it, I am done. I liked the sketch of English society in the early 1800s with all its hypocricies & vanities. The characters were oftentimes ridiculous & amusing, & while there weren't any true heros in this novel (as we're warned about in the beginning), there were still a few that you rooted for. A long and rewarding look at the vanities of a worldly existence, Vanity Fair has created one of the greatest female villains of fiction. Becky Sharp has the cold, calculating lack of human compassion found in Madame Defarge, self-interested pursuit of personal appetites of Madame Bovary, and polished and apparently innocent outward persona of Steinbeck's Cathy.
