I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
If you've read anything about this book, you'll know that it's a re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice, set mostly in today's Cincinnati. Jane is a yoga instructor ( this fits her surprisingly well), Liz is a free-lance writer for magazines, Mary takes online classes, and Lydia and Kittie mostly just go to Cross-Fit. Chip Bingley has achieved a small degree of fame by being on the show Eligible, which is pretty much The ...more

So much fun for retelling. I really enjoyed it and I think anyone else who loves a good pride and predjudice retelling will to.
Pride and Prejudice is Austen's look into the absurdity of the time with a touch of humor. Such as, Mrs. Bennett's obsession in finding wealthy husbands for her girls and the posh society of the Darcy's that many a fortune hunter aspires to. Eligible is a tribute to this very well known story while still being a very fresh take in its own right.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn't been positioned as part of the Austen project. On its own, it's a decent novel with some light moments. As a retelling of P&P, it doesn't work. - Yes, it feels quite strange witnessing Elizabeth Bennett having spontaneous "hate sex" with Mr. Darcy, but
- the transfer of the characters' personalities into the 21. century, especially those of Mrs. Bennett, Jane, Charlotte and Lydia, has been admirably done.
- The mix of unconditional love, shame and exasperated distress Liz feels for her sisters and mother and the defeat she experiences when faced with her father's complacent passivity are unmistakably there, too.

This one started off a little bit rocky, and I didn't love the whole reality television angle... But it was surprisingly entertaining once it picked up! Now I want to re-read the original Pride and Prejudice.

More of a 3.5 for me. Cute retelling of the pride and prejudice story. I didn't like Liz as much as I wanted to, nor Mary or the younger Bennett sisters either. But overall, decent read.
