The subtitle is all the synopsis you need: A Modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. This is the fourth installment of the planned retellings that comprise The Austen Project, wherein contemporary authors tackle one of Austen’s works and reimagine it in a modern setting. I previously read Alexander McCall Smith’s version of Emma.

I enjoyed this take on Pride and Prejudice. But I thought it was longer than it needed to be and the main characters could have been more fleshed out, especially Darcy. I also didn't care for this version of Elizabeth Bennet. I didn't really like her. Somehow though this novel did bring me into the family drama and I was invested in how things were going to turn out. The modern versions of events from the original novel were amusing as well. I also thought the author got the sarcastic wit and to

I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn't been positioned as part of the Austen project. On its own, it's a decent novel with some light moments. As a retelling of P&P, it doesn't work. I'm not a purest looking for reasons to complain - I enjoy retellings, and reinterpretations of many novels. I wasn't going to read this. First, Pride and Prejudice is one of my top 5 favorite books ever, maybe top 2. It's only of a handful of books I've re-read, I'm not a re-reader. Second, I don't typically like modern retellings of classics, and I feel like that whole genre is so overdone. Third, I am so not into the whole reality show thing, especially shows like The Bachelor. However, I needed to read a retelling of a classic for the Pop Sugar challenge, so I picked this one (I've already read P&P

This was delightful! I can't bear most "updated" retellings of Jane Austen's works, but this is witty and fun, and very well written. I have already recommended it to my daughter, and recommend it here to anyone who loves P&P and is open to the idea of a modern re-telling.

DNF at 48%. This wasn't a re-telling or a re-imagining so much as a cheap knock off of the original. Setting P&P in the present could work, but not the way this was done. Everyone was ridiculous, and not in the amusing and endearing way of the original. Also, the 'witty banter' between Darcy and Liz wasn't witty or banter. It was more like two completely self-centered people taking pot shots at each other and complaining about their own lives in parallel to each other. Also, it was really annoyi
