By the time I was on tape two of seven, I wondered about continuing the book as it is hard to imagine a satisfying ending. And if the characters haven't really minded their isolation, then why should I mind as the reader? Well, the book does give a sense of emptiness, questioning, human desires---what really matters at the end of life? Or daily and throughout so there are no regrets at the end of life?

Loved the book, hated the ending. This was building up to be a perfect 10, but it didn't stick the landing.

Recommended for fans of Crow Lake. Maybe. Or maybe I'm irritated enough by the ending to not recommend this for anyone.

Really cool look at the end of the world seen from two very distant perspectives: the North Pole and deep space. The characters were engaging, and the surprise revelations at the end were superbly done without being trite or formulaic.

I just couldn't get into this book...well, half of this book at least. This is a post-apocalyptic book with two points of view: one is an Arctic researcher that decided to stay behind when everyone else was evacuated when something happened (it is never explained) and the crew of a spaceship coming back from an expedition to Jupiter. The book goes through how these two groups deal with the silence/loneliness of being alone. I thought that the crew was much more interesting than the Arctic guy. I ...more
