I was surprised that most of this story was told from a third person's point of view. The story was very short, but that didn't limit the amount of detail added. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, it wasn't so creepy that I had nightmares:) My favorite part of this book was the accurate description of addiction and temptation, I felt like even though Mr. Hyde was an extreme, we can all identify in our own lives with whatever trials we are trying to overcome. ...more

The afterward is particularly good in creating a starting point for a dialog about this book. The language tires me, but that is often the case with books written in the 1800s. Well worth the investment of an afternoon to read this classic.

“…I have been made to learn that the doom and burden of our life is bound for ever on man’s shoulders, and when the attempt is made to cast it off, it but returns upon us with more unfamiliar and more awful pressure.”

I don't think I'd ever read this before, but it's surprisingly good. It's odd reading it, knowing exactly what's happening, even though the narrator has no idea. I hadn't realised that in the end, the way they find out what was going on, was a deathbed confession - it reminds me quite a bit of The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner in that regard. Glad I finally read it. ...more

As Classics go, this was more a novella than a novel but nevertheless, it was a fabulous read. A perfect example of the later Victorian gothic, with deep questions about the nature of evil and its power over ordinary people.
