Well that was about one of the most depressing books I've ever read. But after about 20% into it I just could not put it down. Or in my case, turn it off. Since I was listening to the audiobook. I don't think I would have loved this book as much if I read it instead of listened to it. The accents of the narrators made the characters more believable and real to me. Unlike Hosseini's first two novels, this one is more a collection of related short stories rather than a novel. Much of the book involves a series of interspaced stories involving one or both of the story of Abdullah and Pari, two Afghani children of a poor laborer and his wife. Abdullah is more a parent figure to his three-year old sister than a brother. OK, 3.5 stars, but I was a bit disappointed in this book after his first two. There were too many characters/stories and it seemed at times, they were not connected well. Would have preferred to know more about Abdullah's life after Pari was adopted and less about Thalia in Greece. ...more
