In real life, the victors write history; in this imaginative re-telling of Pánfilo de Navárez's ill-fated expedition to La Florida, the story gets told by Mustafa, a black moorish slave of one of the soldiers. The picture is of course different from the official one and at the end Lalami points that out again and again. It's a good book, but I found myself wondering whether Mustafa was in many ways more like the Spanish than the native Americans. ...more
