It took me a while to get into this huge book as there are a lot characters with what seems to be equal emphasis on them as protagonists but I was soon entranced. As you could guess from the title most of the action is set many boats, and mostly at sea.
It is almost completely separate from the previous trilogy but it is set in the same world but far away. I think this is probably the best pirate book I have ever read (not that I have read many).
Just don't read this book unless you can get hold

Bingtown is a trader town mostly ruled by the founding families who have gained wealth through their liveships, vessels made from wizardwood who after three generations turn into sentient beings connected to those with the blood of their families. The newest liveship that awakens is Vivacia to the Vestrit family. Unfortunately the tragedy that leads to her awakening also leaves the family with instability.
